Mt. Bethel
Named for the first building along the unit block of Rhode Island in 1902, formerly the Central Methodist Protestant Church, now called Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. Behind the Room Name Former slaves established the congregation of Mount Bethel Baptist Church in 1875. The building is a prominent landmark in the economically and ethnically diverse Bloomingdale neighborhood and was a staging point for the famed 1963 March on Washington. The church has a long tradition of community outreach. Among the much-needed services that Mount Bethel provides to its congregation and its community are: educational and recreational programs for youth, including year-round tutoring in reading and computers, summer camps, and Boy and Girl Scout programs; senior health fairs; and the Self Help and Resource Exchange ("SHARE") food distribution program.
