Herring

This sunny room is located on our quiet third floor and is charmingly decorated in shades of spring green and gold. One of our smaller rooms, Herring is furnished with a full size bed and ample storage space, and is perfect for guests who prefer less expensive accommodations or need less space.

Behind the Room Name: James Herring

African-American art historian James Herring came to Howard University as an instructor in 1921 and was head of the art department from 1931 to 1952. He worked vigorously with assistance from the Harmon Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation to increase the art collection at Howard University.

As a service to colleges without museums he organized traveling art exhibitions accompanied by lectures and demonstrations. He retired as professor emeritus from Howard University in 1952.

Dr. Herring also helped assemble the Barnett-Aden Art Gallery (another one of our rooms’ namesakes), which provided a place where artists of all races, gender, and creeds could display their works of art.
